I was thinking things have stabilized at work, with major transitions happening over the last few years. Then I get a call saying basically 2/3 of the things I do aren’t really supposed to be in my job description, despite that being exactly what was in my job description when I was hired just a few years ago. I’m all for learning new skills, in fact, it’s something I would like to do MORE, especially where I work at a university. But I was basically told I’ll have to find a way to transition a bunch of my responsibilities BACK to people who have come to rely on me for things... that they can’t do because of staff shortages, among other reasons.
At least tonight, I get to go coach ski jumping and be outside, far from this train wreck. Best case, I get to learn some stuff and can still manage to support the people who know and trust me to keep things going smoothly for them. What I’d really like to do is get an advanced degree so I can do something more interesting. But my wife just got a huge promotion so she’s in the spotlight (there’s literally a press release on her being the first woman in her new job) and I’m patiently hanging back for now.
It’s all good in the long run, but damn. F-you Friday.
Wait. Maybe I’ll go have a beer with my lunch. Hmm....

Idea:
Buy a bunch of bottle rockets
Strap them on your back
Fly away off the ski jump

I hate it when someone decides to build walls around my area of responsibility. I get bored easily and I’m always looking to expand my base of knowledge. It’s pretty rare for someone to tell me that’s not my job unless it requires a stamp (engineering, mostly).
The question I’d be asking is why? Are their budgetary or liability constraints that are forcing this change?

Can’t see a problem with that. I’ll report back from wherever I land, if there’s wifi.

lol, not less work. Just “different” work. I mean, I will be learning new things, that’s good, but it’s just... the way it’s happening.

Nah, it’s all in the name of utilizing people to the best of their ability. And admittedly, I’m not maxed out right now. But I have lots of responsibilities outside work that are, frankly, more important to me - young kids, for example. So... I’m not looking for a change. I will get to learn new things, which is always good.

Also, I’m like you in that I get bored if I’m doing the same stuff. Which is how I landed in a job (my current one) without any formal background in the field. I self-taught at my last job where there was a need for the skills. So I learned them. And it was far easier to look for an IT job than a marina management position, lol.
